A rapid evidence review on care models for people with sickle cell disease in uncomplicated crisis

SPH was commissioned by the NHS England National Healthcare Inequalities Improvement Programme to undertake a rapid evidence review on care models for people with sickle cell disease (SCD) in uncomplicated vaso-occlusive crisis (uVOC). The key questions considered the clinical effectiveness, safety and cost effectiveness of managing patients with SCD experiencing uVOC in a setting that provides direct access to care (bypassing A&E) compared to the current standard model of care.

The evidence review is here: https://www.sph.nhs.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/11/Review-of-care-models-for-people-with-SCD-and-uncomplicated-crisis_final_07.11.23.pdf

National Lung Cancer Screening Programme, evidence review

SPH recently wrote the evidence review that recommended that targeted lung cancer screening should be introduced in the UK.  The National Screening Committee (NSC) made this recommendation to the Department of Health and Social Care and it has now been implemented. Since the programme started last year, over 5,000 lung cancers have been detected, many at an early stage when there is a high chance of successful treatment.

The National Screening Committee described the impact of the programme: Timely detection of thousands of cancers underlines benefits of a national lung cancer screening programme – UK National Screening Committee

Supporting General Practice to manage lipids according to NICE-approved lipid management pathway

The updated NICE-approved lipid management pathway was recently updated. New NHS England service requirements for Primary Care Networks for the management of lipids and identification of familial hypercholesterolaemia came into effect, reflecting the updated NICE guidance.

Eastern AHSN (Academic Health Science Network) is responsible for supporting the adoption of the updated lipid management pathway across the East of England. The AHSN commissioned SPH to carry out a survey of General Practices in the region to help understand and develop future support for practices. Alongside this, Eastern AHSN commissioned SPH to produce an evidence map identifying published evidence about the effectiveness of tools that assist in lipid management and familial hypercholesterolaemia identification. Proactive Care Resources

SPH worked with NHSEI Ageing Well Team and stakeholders to develop a number of resources related to proactive care.  We hope they will be useful for local teams delivering and evaluating proactive care programmes.

International Cardiovascular Disease Prevention case studies

The BHF and Public Health England commissioned SPH to produce a report identifying successful cardiovascular disease prevention programmes from around the world.

The report, International Cardiovascular Disease Prevention case studies, outlines ten case studies that illustrate approaches that may be applicable and effective within the UK.
